Wanda Harding Photography Newsletter October 2, 2005
I am happy to inform that I will be part of a show opening this Thursday at a new (to me) gallery.
I will just have one piece in the show; however, I am excited about it because it is my first time
to print one of my photographs large (30 x 40 inches) and on canvas. The gallery selected “Wavey
Cottonwood” to compliment one of their Tibetan sculptures. I am happy with the large, canvas print
because the image looks even more abstract this size. It is very lively with vibrant colors. Seeing
it, I feel the joy of the sunny, Fall Santa Fe day full of potential that I had when I took the
photograph.

**Press Release:
LOCAL GALLERY PROMOTES HOUSTON WOMEN ARTISTS IN ITS UPCOMING OCTOBER EXHIBITION, “COEXISTING ART: The Relationship of Modern Paintings and Ancient Sculptures”. On October 6, 2005, 7:00PM-9:00PM, International Décor Gallery, 2501 S. Shepherd Dr., presents the opening of a one month exhibition which showcases a wide range of women contemporary artists from Houston. The show is highlighted by displays of abstract paintings contrasted with some of the Gallery’s permanent antique collection of exotic eastern sculptures, statues, and swords. At its last major event, the Gallery encouraged women to educate themselves in art collecting. In continued efforts to increase women’s knowledge on art, this showing will provide some examples of modern creations produced by some of the new, upcoming, and very talented women artists of Houston. The event has a dual mission of increasing recognition for these artists as well as creating a unique presentation of the coexistence of new and old art; and relating different mediums, such as oil paintings and sculptures (wood, bronze, metal). The October Exhibition is a collaboration with Houston women contemporary artists who represent a wide array of styles and techniques. The Gallery embraces the entire spectrum of their accomplishments, from those who have practiced years of organized theory to those who are simply self-inspirational. We were fortunate to find brilliant as well as innovative artists who worked with various mediums, such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed medium, and photography.
The Gallery interviewed about 50 women artists and 16 were chosen
to participate in this unique exhibition. They are the following: Becky
Soria, Margaret Scott Dobbins, Jeanette Chinelli, Madilyn Stein, Ann
McBride, Maryann Lucas, Molly Moore, Wanda Harding, Margaret Carson, Regina
Sherman, Carol Tesch, Peggy Sexton, Roseanne Hudson, and Maria Mercado. Ann
McBride, president of Visual Arts Alliance, has contributed largely with the
Gallery’s networking efforts and has helped to increase the communication of
the Gallery’s mission within the art community. The upcoming show will demonstrate a rainbow perspective of abstract creations in addition to the Gallery showcasing some of its most exquisite pieces from its last exhibition, Asian Art Exhibition, “The Heart and Soul of the East“. This will be the last opportunity to see pieces from this Eastern display which has been on show for the last 2 years. So what you’ll view for example is an 18th Century Buddha bronze sculpture or Tang Dynasty terracotta horse statue, enhanced by a backdrop of a contemporary painting, emulating abstract splashes of color, both warm and cool. One can only imagine the energy produced from the collaboration of ancient sculptures with modern canvases. For those who have not been able to see the collection from the Asian Exhibition, they will appreciate the likeness of these ancient pieces as they relate to the modern world. At the present, there are still artists calling the Gallery to be interviewed for this October Show. Because of the supply of artists, the Gallery will consider having a second part to this exhibition in January 2006. Surely, there is an evident need to promote Houston Women artists. There is also a need to provide information and options to women who want to become art collectors. International Décor Gallery hopes to become a significant resource for women who are inspired to play either roles.
Based on the responses of our fellow women who attended the April 2005
event,
